About Our Lady of Guadalupe
In 1531, Mexican lands were in turmoil. Just ten years before, Cortes conquered the Aztec capital. The Indians were suffering from centuries of human sacrifice.
Christian missionaries struggled with native language and culture.
On Saturday, December 9, 1531, an event occurred that changed their—and our—world forever. On Tepeyac hill, the Virgin Mary appeared to an Indian convert, Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin. Speaking in his native Náhuatl language, she called him affectionately by name and asked him to take a request for her to the bishop: arequest to build a church there as a place for all to encounter her son, Jesus Christ. The task was not easy. The bishop was skeptical, and sent Juan Diego awayrepeatedly, eventually demanding a sign. Nevertheless, Juan Diego returned to the Virgin, and she promised to give Juan Diego a sign the following day. But upon returning home, Juan Diego found his uncle near death, so instead of meeting the Virgin as promised, he sought a doctor. When nothing helped, the next day Juan Diego put on his tilma (cloak) for warmth and went to find a priest, taking a different path to avoid the Virgin. But as he neared Tepeyac hill, the Virgin came down to him, and reassured him of her love, declaring, "Am I not here, I who have the honor and joy to be your Mother?" Promising that his uncle was healed, she sent Juan Diego to gather her sign: sweetsmelling roses growing miraculously on the barren wintery Tepeyac. But when he opened his tilma before the bishop andthe flowers fell out, an even greater miracle was revealed: on the tilma was an image of the Virgin—what we today venerate as Our Lady of Guadalupe. Within six years, over 9 million conversions were recorded in Mexico, and since then millions have prayed before her image. In 2002, the humble Indian Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin was canonized a saint in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, beneath the Virgin’s miraculous image.
About the Relic
Considering that the tilma is made of natural agave fibers, it is nothing short of miraculous that the tilma, enshrined in Mexico City, and this piece of it, have survived for nearly five centuries. According to experts, the cloth should have disintegrated after a decade. In addition to the length of time, it has endured many adverse circumstances including a bombing, an acid spill, and many years of incense, candles, saltpetrinous air, and pilgrims’ hands-on devotion. This relic, which is approximately a half-inch square, is the only known piece of the tilma in the United States. In 1941, while World War II raged in Europe, Archbishop Cantwell of Los Angeles led a pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe to pray for peace. It was the first time a U.S. prelate had visited the Shrine since the 1920s (when foreign clergy had been expelled from Mexico), and the visit helped to ease two decades of tension between the Church and State in Mexico. In gratitude for the visit, the Archbishop of Mexico City sent a piece of Juan Diego’s tilma to Archbishop Cantwell in Los Angeles as a sign of our common faith. Since then, this relic has kept alive the presence of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the United States. In 2003, in commemoration of the first year of Juan Diego’s sainthood, New Haven was one of more than twenty cities to host the relic as it traveled on tour throughout the United States. During that national tour, organized by the Apostolate for Holy Relics and cosponsored by the Knights of Columbus and Holy Cross Family Ministries, more than 150,000 people venerated the relic. The relic usually resides in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, California. His Eminence Roger Cardinal Mahony has graciously loaned the relic to the Knights of Columbus this summer. The relic will be available for veneration at the Knights of Columbus Museum after the procession, and will be displayed in a medallion hung around a 17th century statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Message from State Deputy concerning Events in CT
Good Evening My brother Knight, I hope that after my return from the convention in Phoenix, I have caught up on all my mail. First I would like to congratulate FDD Vinny Esposito, for making CT number ONE in the Squires Program. We lead the Order in percentage of new circles and new Squires. Several of you have ask for information on starting or restarting the Squires in your area. I have asked FFD Tom Onze to assist Vinny with the program. Both of these men can assist you. Visit www.kofc.org for more information on the supreme convention. The state picnic is Sunday Sept 13 in East Hartford. Please contact Gary McKeone for more information. Soccer Challenge will be taking place shortly... so if you have not ordered the information please do so. Oct 3 will be the CT Catholic Men's conference in Wallingford. Visit www.ctcatholicmen.org for more information or if you would like to be a captain to coordinate the event in your parish. District Deputies will be getting information to pass along to the Grand Knights shortly. Oct 4 is our Rosary in Litchfield. We ask that you visit www.kofc-ct-state.org for all the latest information on events and especially degrees. Our site is updated regularly. We are working on the Grand Knight seminars. I had hoped to have it a one day event, but it looks to be more than likely 2 hours. at four or five locations around the state. The Grand Knight DVD is located on our website for your review. Finally, I can not express enough our need to recruit new members to our Order. Last year we ended at minus 220 for the year. As of today we are minus 202. This is not a very good start to the fraternal year. As I said at the convention we will help councils to get them started, but we can not run the drives. We need to run the state like a business and with some 30 parishes with NO Knights of Columbus presence, we have more than enough room to grow. At the District Deputy summer seminar my goal is 1300 new Knights on the plus side. That's a little over 100 new members a month, we are well short of that as of today. 187 Active councils with two more that will be reactived in the very near future, means 7 members per council, but you also must replace members who leave or are called home. Brothers now is the time to plan for a better local council. I wish all of you the very best. Fraternally,
Scott A. Flood State Deputy Connecticut State Council Knights of Columbus

Knights of Columbus welcome new members
Guiding principles of ‘family, faith, charity and morality’
Putnam, Conn. – The area’s Knights of Columbus recently welcomed thirteen (13) new members. On Sunday, March 23, three local K of C councils inducted new members, at a private ceremony.
“We are committed to expanding in our part of Windham County,” said Connecticut State Council District 28 Deputy Richard P. Watson. “We’re also committed to our families, our faith and to advancing the causes of charity and Catholic morality.”
With over 600 members, District 28 consists of five local K of C councils, including Mystical Rose Council 49, headquartered in Wauregan, Cargill Council 64 in Putnam, St. Bernard Council 2087 in North Grosvenordale, St. James Council 2883 in Danielson and Mary Our Lady of the Assumption Council 10454, in Dayville and Rogers.
Inducted were Christopher Deojay, John W. Lambert, Andrew Langevin, Robert E. Molloy, Kyle Napierata, Peter H. Plantier, Anthony J. Purcell, Shawn P. Whiston, all of St. James Council 2883 in Danielson, Jeffrey T. Bond, Charles H. Bourgeois, Joel K. Phelps and David A. Spooner, of Council 2087 in North Grosvenordale and Kenneth D. Farland, of Council 64 in Putnam.
The induction ceremony was held at the home of Cargill Council 64, on Providence Street in Putnam. The ceremony was conducted by an experienced team of Knights from District 28.
“We have an obligation to offer membership in the Knights of Columbus to every eligible Catholic man in our region. I’m proud to say we’re doing just that,” Watson said.
Founded in New Haven, Connecticut in 1882, the Knights of Columbus is a fraternal benefit society made up of Roman Catholic men and their families. Today there are almost 26,000 Knights in 174 active councils in the state.
The society has since expanded worldwide from its small beginnings in New Haven. Today, the Knights of Columbus has more than 1.7 million members and their families in over 13,000 active, local councils, in a dozen countries, including many of the nations in the Western Hemisphere. In 2005, the Knights expanded into Europe, founding the first councils in Poland.

Catholic Awareness Day
Dear Brother Knights,
We all know that Connecticut suffered a tragic blow to religious liberty last year when the legislature forced the "Plan B" drug on our Catholic hospitals. The only way to prevent further attacks on our freedoms-and to reverse the damage that has already been done-is for Catholics to make their voice heard at the state Capitol. That is why we need as many Knights of Columbus as possible to attend Catholic Awareness Day at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford on Thursday, March 6th.
First, I want to underline that Catholic Awareness Day will be March 6th. The Catholic Transcript and a few other sources have listed an incorrect date. Please encourage your councils to send as many brother Knights as possible to Hartford to defend our rights as Catholics on March 6th.
Second, encourage your brother Knights to call ahead for an appointment to meet with their legislators while they are in Hartford. If you have questions or need assistance please call the Connecticut Catholic Conference at 860-524-7882. You may schedule a meeting with your legislator for anytime during the event. Senate Democrats 1-800-842-1420 Senate Republicans 1-800-842-1421 House Democrats 1-800-842-1902 House Republicans 1-800-842-1423.
While buses will run from St. Thomas Seminary, Bloomfield, to the Legislative Office Building (LOB) from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., there will be no prayer service at St. Joseph's Cathedral this year. Instead, there will be a greeting and opening prayer at the LOB and then the workshops will begin.
Workshops will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the Old Appropriations Room of the Capitol, the building next to the LOB (staff will help direct you). The introduction of these workshops will include background on the legislative process and the Connecticut Catholic Conference Advocacy Network and lunch will be provided. The bishops will hold a press conference at 11:45 a.m.
The Church's emphasis this year can be seen in the day's change of name: Catholic Awareness Day. The workshops are intended to inform, but we are free to break away from them at any time to meet with legislators. Shuttle buses will be returning to St. Thomas Seminary at 1:30 p.m. The last bus will leave the Legislative Office Building at 3:00 p.m.
The State Council asks that as many of us as possible show our support for the work of the Church by attending the workshops, speaking with our legislators and hearing the Bishops address the issues facing our state. Vivat Jesus!

November 17, 2007
Dear Cargill Brother Knights:
We are looking forward to you becoming a full member with us, by completing your Second and Third degrees of membership in the Knights of Columbus.
In order to become a Third-Degree member in good standing, you must take part in both Second- and Third-Degree exemplifications. As noted in the attached flyer, the next Second- and Third-Degree exemplifications will take place locally, at St Bernard Council 2087 in North Grosvenordale, on Sunday, December 2. It’s rare that these degrees are given here in northeastern Connecticut, so it’s an opportunity you shouldn’t miss.
Dress will include button-down, dress shirts, suit jackets and slacks, with no jeans or sneakers permitted. We will provide you with the white necktie to be worn by candidates.
The exemplifications will be followed by a luncheon and reception. There is no charge for you to attend the exemplifications and luncheon. You may bring guests, but note that the days’ activities are private. Therefore, any guests must be Third-Degree Knights in good standing. Guests will each be charged $6.00 at the door if they wish to stay for the meal.
Please telephone me no later than Nov. 28 at 974-0341 and leave a message, to confirm whether you will be participating, along with the number of guests, if any, who will be coming with you. Since we need an exact count by Nov. 28, we also need to know if you won’t be attending, so call and leave a message, regardless of your plans.
Please feel free to contact me by phone or email, if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you on December 2.
Fraternally Yours,

Mid-Year Meeting of State Deputies in Washington, D.C.
 |
| Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson addresses state deputies at their mid-year meeting in Washington, D.C. |
Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson told state deputies gathering for their mid-year meeting in Washington, D.C., Friday evening that “tremendous opportunities” for growth in membership, insurance and charity await Knights of Columbus at every level during the coming year. View video
The theme of the opening session Saturday morning was strategic planning for growth in membership, new councils, insurance coverage, fraternal service and charitable efforts.
More Photos
“Have a team in place to advance the plan so you don’t have to start over every one or two years, when a new state deputy starts,” Supreme Knight Anderson said. “You have to sow wheat and oats. Have a plan for immediate growth but also a plan to develop growth over the long term – three, four and five years down the line.”
He also said that the potential for growth for the Knights of Columbus is virtually unlimited, given the fact that the Catholic Church is growing in every jurisdiction where the Order is active. Growth among Hispanics, who are the fastest growing population in many jurisdictions, is especially important, he said.
 |
| George Hanna, vice president of Fraternal Services. |
In a presentation on “The Importance of a State Strategic Growth Plan,” George Hanna, vice president for Fraternal Services, said that one of the surest ways to attract new members is through consistent and effective programming in areas of family life, pro-life issues and support of the Church. The state deputy should develop a strategic plan and communicate it to the districts and councils, he added.
“You must have a vision for growth and communicate that vision,” Hanna said. “But the vision is not the destination, it is not where you stop. The vision should leave room for others to build on and go beyond.”
He said the membership Blitz, which is scheduled twice a year by the Supreme Council is not the only goal for membership growth. “The Blitz is the beginning and aid, but each jurisdiction must be membership active 24/7, 365 days a year.”
 |
| Louis Barbour, director of Council Growth and Development. |
Louis Barbour, director of Council Growth and Development, spoke on New Council Development, Round Tables and Council Reactivation.”
“This is a great year: the 125th anniversary of the Knights of Columbus, and you are the state deputy for this historic year,” Barbour said. “We can make this the best year ever in terms of membership and council growth, and in charitable giving,” adding that there is no alternative: “What if we do not grow? Who will replace all our efforts for the most needy?”
After Saturday morning’s general session, supreme officers, board members and regional program consultants joined the state deputies in a series of workshops dealing with strategic growth plans, using the Shining Armor Program to aid in recruitment and retention, developing a partnership with the insurance field force, and ideas for new council development.
Saturday evening, the state deputies and supreme council board members will be joined by vice supreme masters of the Fourth Degree, as well as a large contingent of Washington area Knights in regalia for the official dedication of the Knights of Columbus Incarnation Dome at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. |

Columbus Day Parade - New Haven
My Dear Brother Knights,
As we continue the 125th Anniversary celebration of our Order - I am honored to extend a warm invitation from Brother Knight and member of San Salvador Council #1 - our Supreme Secretary - Mr. Robert J. Lane - to all Knights and Councils in CT to join the Columbus Day parade in New Haven on Sunday Oct 7th.
Mayor DeStefano's office has announced that Brother Lane will be the Grand Marshall for this great celebration. All Knights - both 3rd & 4th degree are cordially invited and encouraged to show their spirit and colors by marching in Unity. The Knights of Columbus has the unique honor of leading the parade with the Fourth Degree Color Corps carrying all 28 flags of the US - which preceded our current 50 star flag!
Working with the fine museum staff - under the direction of Larry Sowinski - the Dept of Fraternal services has arranged - free parking at the museum. Transportation will be arranged to convey marchers to the starting line. It should be noted that the parade will end just a couple blocks from the museum and all marchers are invited back for refreshments following the parade.
The New Haven parade committee has made available a parade application form (which is attached) with the suggestion that councils and assemblies simply fill in the blanks as they apply to your particular situation. Marchers are requested to arrive at the museum as close as possible to 11:00 a.m.
Council and Assembly banners are kindly requested. In order to coordinate the refreshments, I ask that you notify both District Master - John McKeone and State Deputy - Phil Guerrette - of the expected number of people in your contingent.
This 125th anniversary celebration is truly the "Experience of a Lifetime" - a celebration not to be missed! So rally the troops and join the fun on Sunday Oct 7th!!!! Let's show New Haven that we indeed have strength in numbers!!!
Vivat Jesus!
Phil Guerrette

Message from Our District Deputy
Worthy Grand Knights,
I’m forwarding this information to you to ensure that each council has or is in the process of setting up a retention committee. As you can see the state is not happy.
Fraternally Your
Richard P. Watson
District Deputy.

Worthy District Deputies,
Of the 178 councils in CT - only 24 have identified their Council Retention Chairman. The State Council has a long standing policy on suspensions - NAMELY: no council will be allowed to suspend members if they have NOT setup an active retention committee.
Implicit in this policy is the requirement to notify the State Deputy of the Name, Address and most importantly Phone Number and E-mail address of the committee chairman.
I am constantly amazed at how few councils are following this policy! Effective immediately - I will be enforcing this requirement. With each suspension submission to Supreme - I get an email asking how I want to handle the suspension request.
Several things must happen - or the suspensions will be denied:
Proper 1845 process must be followed:
- Council's must make an honest effort to contact members
- "No Phone" is not an acceptable excuse for NOT contacting delinquent members - try www.whitepages.com or similar computer sites. If I can find a number - the committee can also
- A current Form 365 must be on file with State Deputy - identifying Retention Chairman
Worthy DD, if you are in doubt about your councils - let me just say that only 36 councils have submitted the form 365 this fraternal year - and - only 24 bothered to name a retention chairman. Don't let your councils be surprised by a rejection from Supreme. Get a current copy from your FS's - check for the retention chairman and ensure it is forwarded to Supreme, DD, and State Deputy.
