Council # 2883 - Danielson, CT
Lent

Fish & Chip Dinners

Fish and Chip dinners will be served at the council home (St. Joseph's Hall), Dayville on Fridays during Lent.

September & October 2007

Dear Brother Knights,

Those of you that could make it were treated to a relaxing afternoon with no shortage of food or company on August 25th at the Council picnic. Thanks to Don and Clarice Laperle for their hospitality, and for all those that helped make the picnic a success.

Things are really getting busy at Council 2883. First, I would like to mention our newest member – Melvin (Mel) Davis. I had the pleasure of meeting Mel at our meeting on September 10th, and he is ready to get involved with helping the council. The following activities are

·        Father O’Neill has offered the Bingo food concession to the council to use as a fundraiser…we gratefully accepted this offer! Contact Grand Knight Mike Schaefer if you wish to be part of the kitchen team. Bingo runs each Thursday evening and starts on September 27th.

Brother Joe Cacciapouti is putting together

teams to work the bingo. Please contact him

if you have any interest in helping out with

calling numbers, checking bingo cards, etc.

·        The installation of officers is slated for 1:00 p.m. on September 23rd at the Danielson Elks Lodge. All council members and guests are welcome – a family style roast beef dinner will follow the installation. Jacket and tie is requested. Please RSVP by September 16th to Deputy Grand Knight Jerry Kopfman at 546-6709 or gkopfman@hotmail.com.

·        The annual Steak or Bean golf tournament will be held on Sunday, September 30th at the Brooklyn Golf Course. Tee off is at 11:00, with registration starting at 10:30. Golfers will be dining at the Danielson Elks Lodge after nine holes on either a very large sirloin steak with all the trimmings, or franks and beans. The cost for the tournament is $40.00 per person. Contact Brother Ernie Caron at 774-6445 if you want to reserve a spot…but hurry, because space is limited and the open slots are going fast.

·        A church membership drive is to take place at ALL Masses on the weekend of October 27th and 28th. Father O’Neill has offered the pulpit to the Knights to help in our efforts. We owe Father a debt of gratitude…so let’s be there and be visible on that weekend. We will need two Knights at each door at each Mass to hand out pamphlets and interest cards. I will be calling on Knights to stand and be recognized at every Mass, so please be there.

·        Brother Norman Smith is organizing a bus trip to New Haven to visit St. Mary’s Church, the final resting place of Father Michael McGivney, and the Knights of Columbus Museum. The trip is tentatively scheduled for November 4th, and is open to all Knights and their families and friends. Space is limited to 46 people, and the cost of the bus trip (excluding lunch) will be between $20.00 and $25.00 per person. The bus would leave the St. James parking lot at 8:30 a.m. and return late afternoon. Contact Norman Smith at 774-4889 or Gene Audet at 774-4218 for tickets or more information.

·        After a lengthy hiatus, the Council will once again be participating in the Tootsie Roll program. Under the direction of Brother Peter Klotz, this endeavor will raise money for the intellectually disabled. Much of the money raised through the Tootsie Roll Drive will benefit the Special Olympics. The drive will take place during the month of October. If you can help, contact Peter Klotz at 774-4159.

·        The Council will also be promoting various programs with the students at St. James School. More information on these programs will follow.

·        The Council is selling “Keep Christ in Christmas” car magnets. The price is $4.00 each or 3 for $10.00.

Contact Grand Knight Mike Schaefer if you would like to purchase one for yourself or as a gift for a family member or friend.   Show the world that you are not willing to                     let society take away one of the most important Christian holy days!

·        If you need more raffle tickets, contact Mark Rabitor at 774-6786. The drawing will be held over Columbus Day weekend.

There will be a First Degree Exemplification in Putnam on the morning of September 30th. Contact Brother Garry Beausoleil (617-6082) if you know of anyone that is thinking of joining the Knights.

There are several Second and Third Degree Exemplifications coming up, but mostly in the western part of the state. I will be contacting First Degree members to arrange taking the Second and Third Degrees this fall.

The Council has paid for liability insurance, especially important as we get more exposure through various functions.

Have a great Autumn!

Vivat Jesus!

Fraternally,

Michael G. Schaefer, Sr.

Grand Knight

“How do you like my game, caddy?” Arnold asked proudly.

“It’s okay sir, but I still prefer golf.”

July & August 2007

Dear Brother Knights,

I am pleased to be a new member of Council 2883 in Danielson, and even more pleased to have been elected as the Grand Knight for this upcoming fraternal year. This is a time for great anticipation, as together we strive to increase membership with Catholic men of all ages, and implement programs that will serve the Church, St. James School, the community and our families. As a council, we need to promote leadership of those members who are willing and able to take on leadership roles, and support the programs that become part of the Council’s agenda.

As Knights, we are expected to help the clergy in any way we can, and assist with functions designed to provide support to the School. In doing this, it is important that those we help reciprocate by either joining the Knights themselves or encouraging others to join. Without membership growth, there will be no growth of programs.

Having just left the position of District Deputy, I can say with some surety that there is a great and growing spirit of inter-council fellowship and cooperation this year: The pro-life chairmen from the councils in this area plan to hold several prayer services for the intention of ending abortion; there is no reason to not join with other councils in this area to take a trip to the Knights of Columbus Museum in New Haven; the Free Throw Championship and Soccer Challenge work well with more than one council; Grand Knight, Leo Chatelle of Council 10454 in Dayville has been insinuating that if any council were take on his in a “washers toss” competition, there would be no mercy shown. I am sure District Deputy Richard Watson and District Warden John Ryan will facilitate this atmosphere of inter-council fraternity as they take the helm in District 28. One shining example of inter-council cooperation is the establishment and maintenance of District 28’s website, which has been undertaken by Cargill Council 64 in Putnam. For this, we owe Grand Knight Frank Bichard and the rest of the council our gratitude. For those so inclined to go online, the website is www.kofcdistrict28.org. Follow the link to Council 2883 for this newsletter (Knightly News) and periodic updates and photographs. If you have items that you wish to see posted, please email them to me at mgschaefer@sbcglobal.net, so that I can provide them to the webmaster.

I would like to welcome our two newest members, Michael T. Charron and John J. Lupien, who made their First Degree on June 17th. Both Brother Charron and Brother Lupien responded to Father O’Neill’s, “Father Wants You” letter and are sure to make fine additions to the council.

As the Church basement is not very conducive to holding a council meeting with proper decorum, I am researching the possibility of lining up other meeting space.

Lastly, I have been “volunteered” for the dunking booth on Wednesday, August 1 at 8:00 PM at the bazaar. If you want to get even for things I will surely impose on you should you try to dunk me, come on down. I will re-think my participation of the water temperature is below 85 degrees.

Vivat Jesus!

Fraternally,

Michael G. Schaefer, Sr.

Grand Knight

The Council 2883 picnic is scheduled for Saturday, August 25th at Donald Laperle’s house at 44 School Street in Danielson. More details will follow.

The installation of officers is being set up for one weekend in September. We hope to combine the installation with a Mass for deceased members and a dinner to follow. More details will follow as they become available.

A steak or bean golf tournament is being set up tentatively for the last Sunday in September. This is a great event, especially if you get to eat steak after the golf round. More information will follow. Thanks to event chairman, Ernie Caron.

You will be receiving raffle tickets soon. Drawing will be held on Columbus Day weekend. Thanks to organizer Mark Rabitor.

Council 2883 donated $200.00 to the St. James Golf Tournament.

The police arrived and found a woman dead on her living room floor with a golf club next to her body.

One of them asked the husband, “Mr. Jones, is this your wife?”

“Yes,” the distraught man replied.

“Did you kill her?” a policeman asked.

“Yes, I did,” he sighed.

After examining the body, Sergeant Flaherty said, “It looks to me like you struck her eight times with this 3-iron. Is that correct?”

“I’m afraid it is,” Jones admitted, “but put me down for a five.”
